Effects on the Frontal Lobe

The frontal lobe is in the forehead region and can be damaged in any type of head injury. Damage to the frontal lobe can cause paralysis of some body parts. As the frontal lobe determines the ability to plan, you can have difficulty planning complex tasks. There can be a lack of spontaneity or persistence of a single thought, also called perseveration. You can have changes in mood and social behavior. You can have difficulty problem solving and personality changes. There is a type of aphasia (inability to speak) associated with the frontal lobe called Broca’s aphasia that can happen if the frontal lobe is damaged.

Effects on the Parietal Lobe

The parietal lobe is associated with the area of the head near the back and top of the head. If you suffer trauma to your parietal lobe that is permanent, you can have problems with attention and an inability to name objects (called anomia) or an inability to write words or letters, called agraphia. You can have problems in drawing and a difficulty being able to tell the difference between left or right. Mathematics is a problem with a condition known as dyscalculia. Your awareness of your body in space can be impaired so that self care is a problem.

Effects on the Occipital Lobes

Damage to the occipital lobe involves damage to the back of the head and can cause common problems with the nervous system after resolution of the acute symptoms. It can cause deficits in vision or visual field cuts. You can also have problems with locating objects in space or with identifying colors, called color agnosia. Hallucinations are possible as are visual illusions or word blindness, which is an inability to recognize words. You can have problems identifying the movement of an object (called movement agnosia) and difficulties with both reading and writing.

Effects on the temporal lobe

The temporal lobe is located on side of the head, just above the ears. You can develop a difficulty recognizing faces, trouble understanding the spoken word, also called Wernicke’s Aphasia. Selective attention of the spoken word is impaired and there is short term memory loss. There can be changes (an increase or decrease) in interest in sexual behavior and there can be an inability categorizing objects. It’s possible to have damage to the right lobe which causes persisting talking. Aggressive behavior is a possibility.

Effects on the brainstem

The brainstem is deep within the brain and has the ability to determine important parts of the brain and brain function. Breathing can be deeply affected; there can be difficulty swallowing food and water. Balance and movement can be affected and there can be vertigo, associated with dizziness and nausea. Insomnia and sleep apnea can be problems associated damage to the brainstem.

Effects on the Cerebellum

The cerebellum is located at the base of the skull. It coordinates movements. Permanent damage to the cerebellum causes a loss of ability to coordinate fine movements or to walk. Reaching and grabbing become a problem and there can be dizziness and tremors of the extremities. Speech can be slurred and movements are slow.
