A mild traumatic brain injury is also known as a concussion. It defines one of the most common brain disorders and the most common traumatic brain injury. Approximately 1.5 million individuals in the US sustain traumatic brain injuries. In the range of mild to severe brain injuries, about 50,000 people die from traumatic brain injuries per year and about 230,000 individuals are hospitalized from a traumatic brain injury and survive the injury. About 80,000 people experience some form of long lasting disability from sustaining a traumatic brain injury.

About 75 percent of all traumatic brain injuries are considered mild traumatic brain injuries at a cost of $17 billion per year. It isn’t known how many concussions are received per year that aren’t seen at a hospital but still cause some type of residual problem.

A mild traumatic brain injury or MTBI is defined as a blunt trauma or acceleration deceleration injury to the brain that results in transient confusion, disorientation, memory dysfunction, impaired consciousness, seizures after the injury, irritability, vomiting, headache, dizziness, tiredness or poor concentration.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury include a persistent headache, neck pain, confusion, fatigue, changes in sleep habits, memory or cognitive problems, mood changes, seizure disorder or visual or other sensory changes. Most people recover fully from the event but up to 15 percent of mild traumatic brain injuries sustain prolonged symptoms.

The symptoms can occur immediately after the injury has taken place. It can also take place hours or days after the initial injury. The injury pattern can change with immediate symptoms of confusion or loss of consciousness and more prolonged symptoms of vomiting, loss of concentrations or seizures. It’s important to remember that concussions can occur in the absence of a loss of consciousness.

Our brain injury compensation solicitors also deal with applications for awards of damages for personal injury on the basis of miss-diagnosis by healthcare professionals which can cause a worsening of the initial problem.

  • Grade 2 Concussion: There is transient confusion without loss of consciousness but symptoms last longer than 15 minutes.
  • Grade 3 Concussion: A loss of consciousness occurs that can last several minutes. There can be a variety of symptoms.

Causes of Concussions

The main causes of concussions include motorcycle accidents, motor vehicle accidents, falls, the use of firearms, sports injuries and recreation injuries. Those at highest risk of sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury include adolescents and young adults or older adults. Young children and babies can also get traumatic brain injuries.

Brain injury compensation solicitors deal with applications for awards of damages for personal injury on the basis of third party negligence including road traffic accidents, trips & slips and accidents at work particularly those involving falls from height and unguarded trap doors.

Prevention of MTBIs

The occurrence of MTBIs can be stopped somewhat by the wearing of a seatbelt at all times in a motor vehicle. You should never drive drunk and always use the right safety seat for your child. You should wear a helmet whenever riding a bike, playing a contact sport, batting a ball, riding a horse or skiing or snowboarding.

There are things you can do at home such as using grab bars with stepstools, installing window guards, removing tripping hazards and making sure your child’s playground area has a soft surface to fall on.

Diagnosing a MTBI

Consider calling it a concussion if there is an injury after which there is confusion, disorientation and amnesia around the time of the injury. If there is loss of consciousness for up to thirty minutes, it can be a concussion. There should be neurological or psychological problems or a Glasgow Coma Scale value of 13 or greater. Recognize again that some symptoms can take place several hours or even days or months after the initial injury.

Treatment

The vast majority of people with a MTBI resolve their symptoms spontaneously and the job of the doctor is to monitor symptoms and recommend physical or occupational therapy if the symptoms don’t resolve spontaneously. It is also important to wait at least a week or two following a mild traumatic brain injury before starting any potentially injurious activities.
